Termite Baiting and Monitoring Systems

Nemesis-in-ground-baitsTermite Solutions recommends the use of the Nemesis Termite Monitoring and baiting system.

Xterm is the Termite Baiting and Monitoring division of Termite Solutions. Xterm was registered in Queensland in 2006 and our specialist technicians have a vast amount of experience in Termite Baiting.

We exclusively use the Nemesis System.

Firstly there are no high priced contracts as with the opposition big name product. Secondly they are a little smaller and much easier to install. They are also much more durable.

Nemesis have specially milled timber blocks or “interceptors” with small grooves installed as the first line of defense and around the structure to be protected. When foraging termites consume the attractant baits, we replace them with our special growth regulator ( chloraflurazon ) and share it with termites from the main colony, resulting in a gradual decline in termite numbers.

A comprehensive baiting program then seeks to maintain a termite-free condition on the customer’s property through ongoing inspection, monitoring and re-baiting as needed. This program can be tailored to your needs and budget. You can choose to participate in the installation and monitoring process which will save you money, and you only call us for advice and/or to apply the Nemesis termite bait safely.

Q. What are the best methods for trapping termites and destroying termite colonies?

A. Nemesis is in our opinion the most cost effective Termite Monitoring system available in Australia.

Firstly, a thorough termite inspection is recommended by the Australian Standards and is necessary before baiting is commenced. The inspection is required to determine the areas where termites are present, and where they can be attracted and baited with Nemesis.

All trees and stumps within the property boundaries should be test drilled and treated if termite activity is found. Mature trees, especially Gum Trees should be targeted, (even in the neighbouring properties) after permission has been obtained. Why spend time and money unnecessarily when a termite nest could be located in a nearby tree and easily treated.

It can take months or longer depending on certain conditions to intercept the colonies working nearby before Nemesis is applied to the stations. Most importantly, the more termites that are attracted and baited, the faster you will gain control of the colony.

Q. How many monitor stations are required to obtain good results?

A. Nemesis is an Australian product designed for and tested under Australian conditions. We recommend that an average of around one station be placed every 3 metres around the perimeter of the buildings to monitor for activity.

The stations should be placed in the areas most likely to contain termites, such as damp areas, in gardens, and areas of high termite activity. The beauty of this system is that extra Nemesis stations can be moved to the ‘hot spots’ when termites are found in order to maximize the treatment process easily and with minimal expense. If lots of bait is being consumed, then it is comforting that the end is near for the colony.

Nemesis is best applied so that subterranean termites feed at multiple locations within their foraging area. Quite simply, the more bait stations installed, the better the chances of locating termites. Installing more stations increases the odds of encountering multiple colonies and secondary nests of the same colony. One or two stations wont do the job so you need to be serious about your baiting program to get the results you want.

When termites have been found in a property it is too late to rely on the in-ground interceptor systems and Nemesis above ground stations are required to be placed in the areas where the termites are feeding.

Q. Is Nemesis safe for my family and pets?

A. The Timber attractants we use are an irresistible Treat for Termites.

Native eucalypt timber interceptors are used in our large Nemesis Stations simply because independent studies have shown that this timber is the most favoured by termites. No dangerous products are used at all. One of the most important features of this product is that Nemesis is less toxic than salt. Nemesis is perfectly safe to humans, dogs and cats, but deadly to termites. Nemesis has a unique stop feed action on termites so once they start feeding on the unique high grade cellulose based baits they shouldn’t cause damage your home because Nemesis is irresistible to termites.

Garden Pests

Garden pests such as ants can invade bait stations. It is best to replace heavily infested bait stations and use methods other than spraying to control the infestation eg. Ant baits located above ground near the stations.

Above-Ground Baiting

In known areas of termite activity such as in skirting boards or architraves inside the home, the stations are installed directly in the path of active termite tunnels after delicately breaking open mud leads or timbers with a screwdriver or sharp knife. Using a thermal imaging camera to locate areas of high activity, the stations can be best located to obtain the maximum results.

Effects tend to be more rapid with above-ground baiting, since the procedure does not require waiting for termites to find the below-ground installations. That is why we advocate that you don’t disturb termites until an expert has inspected the situation, as even the slightest disturbance may take away our best chances to eliminate the colony. Remember…Don’t disturb termites…

Q. How do we know when the Termites Are Under Control ?

A. Even one Nemesis bait station can kill off a termite colony after enough bait has been consumed, though the idea is to get as many termites as possible in the area to be feeding in multiple bait stations at the same time.

In Australia, subterranean termite colonies may contain 250,000 to 500,000 or more individual termites. That means it may take as many as 15 Nemesis bait stations or more to gain control of the termite colony, however our tests average at around 4 consumed baits to achieve control and elimination of a colony. When the termites have eaten enough bait then you can be relatively assured that the termites are under control.

The results of Nemesis baiting are measurable. Your Pest controller can explain the process as the ratio of soldiers to worker termites changes, showing that the colony is in decline, and ultimately the colony will collapse. Regular inspections remain a very important aspect of termite control. When the termites have consumed 1 kilogram of bait, and/or feeding has stopped for a period of 6 months, and there is no indication of active termites anywhere on the property or inside the structure, then you can be relatively sure that the termites are under control. You will observe that only a few if any soldiers are left feeding and we call that the expiry of termite activity.

YOU’VE GOT TERMITES and you want them gone?

Here’s how Nemesis and Xterm does it using Tried and Tested termite control methods.

The first step in the process of termite control is to carry out a thorough inspection and written report. This will determine the amount of termite activity in the area and the areas where termite baiting is most likely to be successful. Nemesis gets to work where the termites are feeding…So, we install the Nemesis In-ground Stations around the building at points near where termites are likely to be foraging in the ground for food. These Stations contain non-toxic attractants and food made of a timber termites prefer to eat.

Above-ground Stations are the preferred approach when termites are already in your home.  Bait is placed in a safe and sealed Station/s when it is installed. Above-ground Stations speed up the process of colony elimination. After the termite colony is eliminated, the Above-ground Stations are removed. These need to be inspected at weekly intervals as the Nemesis baits are so tasty to termites that we find that on average a 100gram sachet of Nemesis can be consumed as quickly as one week.

Above ground Termite stations are an options where termites are already in a building. Stations are placed above areas where termites are feeding and the celulose based bait is applied for the insects to feed on.

Once Termites have been intercepted…They can be easily detected in the Nemesis Stations. The unique design of the Nemesis Station (which is the only Product that has been designed and tested under Australian conditions) allows for termites to be seen without disturbing them. This is very important. And the termites are not disturbed during bait application either. Very simply… we place a premixed sachet of Nemesis in the stations where termites are feeding.

This is when the Nemesis starts to work its Magic. Nemesis Bait is added without disturbing the termites. This is vital to achieve quick and consistent results. Nemesis is highly palatable to termites and they readily consume it in preference to timber. In fact Australian studies show that once termites start feeding on Nemesis they usually stop feeding on the timbers in your home! Nemesis is also non-toxic to you and your pets.

Termites can’t resist Nemesis which leads to the colony’s quick demise. The termites feed on the Nemesis baits and take it back to the colony where it is fed slowly throughout the entire colony. Since the termites die gradually, they do not associate the colony’s demise with the consumption of Nemesis . This ensures that the entire colony is eliminated. Remember this process takes time and patience and there is no quick fix to a termite infestation.

Once the colony has been eliminated and no termite activity has been observed for several months, any remaining Nemesis is removed. Fresh timbers are placed in the In-ground Stations, the Above-ground Stations are removed and ‘Peace of Mind’ monitoring continues. This is because your property remains susceptible to future attack from new termite colonies or other established colonies. To relieve this constant threat the Nemesis System works on an ongoing process of monitoring, baiting and eliminating.

Please note: Not all situations are suitable for termite baiting and there are risks involved in choosing the baiting only options. For further information about termite protection options see our section on Chemical Treatments. Remember when the baiting program stops, so does the termite protection. Ongoing monitoring is commonly a far more expensive option than chemical barrier treatments.

Very Important…

Read this before you sign a contract for a high priced overseas designed Termite Baiting program.

How Nemesis Stations protect your home.

Nemesis Stations simply attract and kill termites and their nests. They are highly attractant to termites and once feeding starts the termites that have fed on the Nemesis active ingredient chlorfluazuron will die. This unique transfer effect has a domino effect on the colony once significant numbers of the invading termites have been affected by Nemesis . Death is certain to the affected termites and a continual program of termite baiting and monitoring will ensure the elimination of the invading colonies.

Unlike other high priced overseas termite baits using the same ingredient, the Australian designed and tested Nemesis product can provide the same result for a price to suit your budget. Only Nemesis has the option for the home owner to be involved in the process and this can significantly reduce the cost of implementing a termite management system and places you in charge of the whole system.

  • Nemesis allows you to install the monitoring stations…
  • Nemesis allows you to inspect the stations on a monthly or more regular basis…
  • Nemesis allows you the freedom of owning the system…
  • Nemesis has no monthly or yearly fees…

Nemesis has no contracts to sign, in fact after termites have been eliminated the system is cost free, i.e. no $700 – $1000 annual maintenance fees to be paid. You only pay Xterm a low call out fee and a low cost per Nemesis bait sachet when termites are found in the bait stations and we safely apply the Nemesis to the termite infested stations. To reduce costs even more you can inspect the stations and call us when additional baits are required. Its easy and we supply you with instructions and photos so you know what to look for.

Nemesis is a long term, effective, family-safe and environmentally responsible termite management system.

Xterm is committed to providing our customers with the best advice and quality affordable termite management systems. We strongly advise our customers to consider the use of Soil Treatments as the first line of defense against termites and our product of choice is Termidor.

The use of bait stations only, or soil treatments only to protect against termites is a minimalist approach, however we believe that the most sensible approach is to protect the building first, and to eliminate the termites as the second line of defence.

Remember that Termidor soil treatments drill spacings are maximum 200mm around the perimeter and succes is almost 100%, whilst the bait monitoring stations are placed every 3 to 4 metres around the building. Termite baiting is not suitable for every situation, so consider using Termidor as your first line of defence. Nemesis stations can be used most effectively as a secondary method of protecting your home, and an effective means for termite colony elimination.

Q. Will the Nemesis Stations attract Termites to my home?

A. Rest easy, the answer is no.

The large Nemesis Stations are there to protect your home and will only intercept those termites that have entered into and are actually foraging in your garden. If the Stations weren’t there then these termites would eventually seek out and attack your home.

If you choose another baiting system, such as the old timber block systems the termites are likely to miss the small stations and again find their way into your home. These timber block systems such as ‘Green Baits’ are in our minds useless and should be considered as a feel good system. That is, they make you feel good, they make the pest manager feel good, but are absolutely useless as a control method. The ‘Green Baits’ system will cost more than the Termidor or Nemesis methods, which make the old arsenic method obsolete.

There is no doubt that only the Nemesis Termite Interception and Baiting System, with its Australian designed Termite Interception Zone encircling your home, forms the most effective baiting system to protect your home.

Consider Nemesis as your Termite Security System .
